Dirt Cups

1. I don't the name "dirt cups". There HAS to be something better, or at least more clever, to call these.

2. This dessert describes our past 2 weeks perfectly. In trying to get our yard ready, we've been dealing with lots of mud, dirt, and worms (cutworms, to be exact). It made for a good joke about why we chose it for the FHE snack; although, I really feel like there's a legitimate FHE lesson in here somewhere.

2. We should just be parents. We make awesome FHE snacks. I have a sneaking suspicion children would better match our enthusiasm for these treats than the adults we gave them to. We were STOKED. The family, not so much.

3. They are YUMMY. Enough so, that you'll probably eat one, even if you can't eat chocolate. And you'll probably only regret it a little, not a lot.

I found the recipe here after a brief and frantic search on pinterest for desserts, followed by a calm suggestion by the hubster.

What You Need:

1/2 C (one stick) butter, softened
8 oz cream cheese, softened
1/2 C powdered sugar
2 (3.5 oz) pkgs instant chocolate pudding mix
3 1/2 C milk
12 oz whipped topping, thawed
1 1/2 pkgs Oreos
1 bag gummy worms

What You Do:

1. Put your Oreos in a food processor, and process the crap out of them. Make sure there are no large chunks left, then dump the crumbs in a bowl.
2. Cream the butter, cream cheese, and sugar. Set aside.
3. Whisk together the pudding mix and the milk. Then add the whipped topping.
4. Combine the pudding mixture and the cream cheese mixture. Stir well.
5. Cut up your gummy worms so that you have enough for each cup to have 2 or 3 pieces
6. Put out 16 (9 oz) cups.
7. Layer in the Oreo crumbs and the pudding mixture, starting and ending with the Oreo crumbs.
8. Top each cup with worms. They look best if you stick the cut ends down in so it looks like they're crawling in or out.

Refrigerate until you're ready to serve.

My Experience:

These are fun and easy! The only thing the original recipe didn't clarify was how many it made, so I included it in the recipe above. It makes 16 cups if you use the 9 ounce variety.

Also, we had to fudge the amount of pudding and milk a little. The instant mixes we found were more like 3.9 ounce, and the hubster followed the directions on the box instead of the recipe, which called for 4 cups of milk. They turned out just fine. :)

When we got them to FHE, the MIL said she'd also seen these done with vanilla oreos and vanilla pudding. Chocolate dilemma solved! They were called Sand Cups or something of the like (again, see #1). We got creative in our thinking and realized those wafer cookies would probably also work really well, and they come in all sorts of fun colors! Experiment this summer we shall.
