The only problem was... I knew I had to wait till there were kids around so I could pretend I was doing it for them. So... when I got asked to babysit the niece and nephew, I may have sounded just a little too excited. I hope they didn't catch on.
I took a BAZILLION pictures (okay, more like 30) of the little rascals playing with the stuff, only to remember they aren't MY kids... so I can't post them on here! So... I got this one:
and decided that would be good enough. (Again, kudos to my adorable little hand model!)
Looking at these pictures... I get excited. This stuff is cool, fun, gooey-but-not-sticky, and gives you an opportunity to teach kids words like "viscous".
Flubber
What you need:
(My excitement level doubled when I saw how easy the ingredients list was)
3 cups Warm Water
2 cups Elmer’s White Glue
Liquid Water Color (food coloring stains)
20 Mule Team Borax, available in the grocery store laundry section.
Glitter (optional)
White Vinegar (for cleaning)
Mix 1 1/2 C water and the glue in a large container. Add coloring to your liking, and make sure it is well-mixed.
In smaller container, mix 1 1/3 C water and the borax. Make sure the borax is completely dissolved.
The website mentions specifically that using exact measurements on this one is a must if you want good flubber, so measure first, THEN let the kids pour. (Don't let them pour the borax, that's a big person job.)
Combine two mixtures and mix well with your hands until all the water is absorbed. aaaannnnnnnd TA-DA!
FLUBBER!!
The kids played with it for a couple of hours... and it took all the self-control I could muster to not take it away and play with it myself.
We had to 1/2 the recipe because I didn't have enough glue and had 0 carseats for a grocery store run. There was BARELY enough for the 2 kiddos... really the recipe, as written above, is ideal for 2 people max. If you want to play, too... make more.
My Experience
In case you didn't quite get it... I thought this was awesome. The only thing I am doing differently next time is measuring the water more closely, and using clear glue. The flubber was a little wet-feeling, although it wasn't messy. Clear glue will give you a color more like the picture on the original website. The recipe calls for white glue, although they allude to the use of clear glue later on in reference to colors, so I'm sure it would work just fine. (I've already been to the store and bought the glue... I'm just waiting for another excuse to make it now.)
This one's definitely a winner! It's a great activity for those days that you're stuck inside. (I won't tell if you send the kids outside then make some for yourself. Just see how long it takes them to come back, and when they do say "Hey kids, look what I made for you!" They don't have to know you played with it first, right?)
I just pulled out a couple of cookie sheets out to keep the mess down. Best part? A little vinegar will clean up any little flubber spills, so you're set!
So... Go make some flubber already!!
It's da best.
