The original plan with this fence was to do white vinyl. We had it all completely priced out and ready to order, then all the sudden Nick found a crazy good deal on a wood fence from a supplier here in town. So he went in to order the fence on Wednesday (I stayed home and did a happy dance... I like wood fences), and they had it ready for us by Friday. It was amazing!
And fast. Very fast. We thought it would take 2 weeks. So... we started out the week thinking it was just a normal week, then halfway through we realized we were putting in a fence in 2 days. Talk about scramble and get it done! Fortunately, it was Memorial Weekend, so we had an extra day. So we picked up our fence on Friday. Then we were going to install the posts on Saturday. Then we were going to put up the rails and pickets on Monday.
We were so naive.
Here it is! Our entire fence! Some assembly required.
Our garage smelled SO GOOD. mmm fresh cut cedar.
Digging the post holes
The dirt out here is so hard that it lifted the bobcat off the ground.
Zooey decided to get in the action. I really wish we could have come up with a way to get her to do this where we needed a fence post!
Side story about the auger: Our wonderful neighbors (seriously... we really like them, and not just because of this story) dug our holes for us with their Bobcat. He has access to machinery that we don't, and it was VERY generous of them to offer to dig our holes. We thought it would take 3ish hours to dig all of our holes for both houses. It took that long to just get halfway through our holes. The dirt out here is just SO HARD! Later that day, while they were digging their own holes, the auger snapped completely in half.
I was appalled! I tried to tell a few people out here my story about the broken auger, expecting them to be just as shocked as I was. But no. Every. Single. Time. They just said "Yep, welcome to Roosevelt." By the third time through the story and the third time through the "welcome" I decided to not even try anymore.
But, seriously. See that thing in the ground? The one that is solid metal and digs holes 2 feet wide?
IT SNAPPED IN HALF!
A completed, and hard-earned side of fence post holes!
We also accidentally dug up a hibernating frog. He wasn't too happy it.
That afternoon, when we realized the posts were just not going to be set that day, I got a little upset. I was tired, sore, sunburned, and behind schedule. But, it didn't take long to look back and realize how blessed we were. We had our holes dug for us by a machine. The holes alone could have taken us DAYS if we had dug them by hand like we were originally planning! After a bit of an attitude readjustment, and a lot of water, we decided to call it good for the day.
Oh, and did I mention that I had a wicked sunburn? Wear a tanktop, I thought. Get a tan for when I go swimming, I thought. NO BECCA! STOP THINKING! I forgot it had been a few years since my shoulders had actually seen sun (full time work and school will do that to you, I guess). So, I got a fun little surprise after just a couple hours of morning sunlight. Yes, I wore sunscreen, and yes, it blistered.
Even Zooey was worn out by the end of the day.
